Articolo di Paolo Rotolo, interessante questo primo confronto su MIR (nella versione Xmir che sarà presente su Ubuntu 13.10) e l’attuale Xorg.

Dopo l’annuncio di Canonical riguardante Mir, che verrà incluso come server grafico di default a partire da Ubuntu 13.10, ho deciso di fare alcuni test (benchmark, in gergo), per valutare se effettivamente le performance di Mir sono paragonabili a quelle del buon vecchio X.org (il server grafico presente attualmente su Ubuntu), come promesso da Mark Shuttleworth sul suo blog.

Tutti i benchmark sono stati eseguiti con la suite “Phoronix Test”, su Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy Salamander).
Ho pensato inoltre di eseguire i test su un hardware di fascia medio-bassa (soprattutto la scheda video), dato che su un PC più potente le differenze fra X.org e Mir sarebbero state meno rilevanti.

  1. With reference to your last picture, X.org is perfectly capable of working with multiple pointers too. Just create a new master pointer/keyboard pair using “xinput create-master $master_name”, and xinput reattach “device” $master_name to move some devices over.

  2. This benchmark should be entitled XMir vs Xorg….As XMir is a compatibility layer, it is naturally going to be slower than Mir. It is like expecting comparable performances in a virtual machine and native install of an OS. I doubt that even in its final iteration, XMir will outperform Xorg. Mir might. The real battle will between Mir and Wayland
