Steam is a great source for any gamer. It is a place that will allow you to try out and enjoy many of the more popular video games that are available on the market today. Steam Greenlight will allow you to vote on games that you would like to see come available. It is a great system for gamers, so they do not have to drop $50 to purchase every game off the shelf. They can simply join Steam and enjoy the most popular ones at a reduced price.

Steam is not only a place to acquire games to play it is also a place where you can talk with other gamers and possibly get information on cheat codes or creative ways to pass a particularly difficult level. It is convenient and rather popular.

Linux Gaming

Linux has always had its own style of gaming. The Linux users had to get creative in order to find a way to download games that were specifically created for the Windows OS to their Linux OS, but the Wine made most of this possible. There are also games that were specifically created for users on the Linux system. It originally seemed like gaming was more of an afterthought with the Linux OS, but lately Linux developers have been pushing their gaming development.

Linux on Steam

Steam has never offered Linux games with their program. It was not until recently that Steam Greenlight began showing Linux games as an option where individuals could vote toward acquiring the ability of download from Steam. This is a huge announcement because it will open up Steam to all Linux users, and will make it extremely easy for Linux users to acquire specialty games in an easy and fast way.

At the moment Steam for Linux in on beta testing for a closed number of tester, so this is a good news and hopefully soon it will be available for everyone.

There are 3 games that have recently been announced that they will be the first set of Linux games available on the Steam program. The games are Cave Story+, The Book of Unwritten Tales, and Defender’s Quest: Valley of the Forgotten.

Defender’s Quest: Valley of the Forgotten:

This is a Role Playing Game (RPG) built around a tower defense game play style. It is a great game to get all of the action without all of the additional fluff that sometimes comes along with RPG.

Defender’s Quest tightly focuses on three things: tactical depth, customization, and story. That means no random encounters, no spikey-haired emo kids, no forced time sinks, and no tedious, repetitive battles.
The battle system builds off of tower defense, with individual characters taking the place of towers. Each character levels-up, learns skills, and equips gear individually, allowing the player to customize their battle experience and strategy. The overall game structure is similar to “tactical” RPG’s, but with a real-time battle system. Game speed is adjustable, and commands can even be issued while the game is paused.

A demo is available via steam, but only for Windows and Mac or on the official website also for Linux.

Cave Story+:

cave
This is a fun quick paced action game that is extremely fun and entertaining. It is an indie game that was developed by a well known indie designer for game play: Pixel. It will offer hours on end of entertainment while being able to maintain the fast action pace that draws you in and holds your interest.

The story:

You wake up in a dark cave with no memory of who you are, where you came from or why you’re in such a place. Uncovering Mimiga Village you discover that the once-carefree Mimigas are in danger at the hands of a maniacal scientist. The Mimigas’ only hope rest squarely on the shoulders of a quiet, amnesiac boy who can’t remember his own name.

The Book of Unwritten Tales:

tale
This is an amazing video game that has extremely impressive graphics. It is another RPG, and will also provide hours of entertainment for an impressive amount of time. It offers a wonderful story line, and quite interesting game play.

The Story:

In a world torn by war, the aged gremlin archaeologist Mortimer MacGuffin harbors the dark secret of a powerful artifact. Whoever calls this artifact his own, will determine the fate of the world.
While the Army of the Shadows sends out its best and most devious agents to discover the secret, the Alliance’s four heroes find themselves involuntarily drawn into the crisis…

There are several more games that are available to vote on for the availability of games that are specific for the Linux OS on Steam. The three games above are not quite available, but will be coming available in the near future. They have just been recently announced that these 3 games will be the first to come available for the Linux OS on Steam. If you are interested in seeing more Linux games come available on Steam than create an account and begin to vote on the Steam Greenlight system so that you will help the Linux games get the push that they need in order to come available.

  1. Some small corrections:

New games on Steam are not priced cheaper than off the shelf retail versions. Depending on what country you live in, you will often find Steam being more expensive. For their holiday sales though, Steam’s prices are usually top notch.

And Book of Unwritten Tales is a point & click adventure game, not an RPG.
