Linux-vs-MicrosoftContinued from : Is your company afraid of Linux?

Fear #2 (Cost!): Let’s look at skill-sets first.  When you hire an employee who labels themselves a Windows Server Administrator, you are generally getting someone whose expertise on servers stops with Windows.  Yeah, sounds extremely obvious, but I am addressing an important point.  When you hire someone who labels themselves as a Linux Server Administrator, you are generally getting someone who knows both Linux and Windows server administration.  Emphasis on the word “generally” as not all windows server admins know only Windows and not all Linux admins are well rounded.

keylaunchkeylaunch: It’s A small utility for binding commands to a hot key. It reads a configuration file in .keylaunchrc. KeyLaunch uses Ctrl, Alt and Shift as modifier keys, the hotkey is up to the user.

Bind your favorite combination to the program you use more, like ctrl-alt-t to open a terminal, use this and you’ll  regret all the time wasted in the past in the menu of Gnome and KDE, go Keyboard !!

  2. Cost! Considering most Linux platforms are free, I am talking about the expertise factor, the affordability of a Linux Admin employee.
  3. Employee knowledge transfer. What if my Linux employee leaves?
  4. Support! Can I get server support? And how much is that going to set me back?
  5. Can it do the job? Can it reliably replace my Windows Server job functions?
  6. Continue reading »
