Today I want to do a roundup of the available text editor for our Linux computer, in particular I’ll take a look at the graphical text editor, so no vi, emacs, nano or joe today.

I’ll post what are in my opinion the pro and the cons of some of the text editor I’ve used in my day by day works, I’m not a programmer but sometimes I’ve to write some shell script or php functions and these software can really help you in these activity.

So let’s take a look at Gedit, Geany, Sublime text and Jedit
Some of these could be classified as IDE, but in general I’ve used them to just do some small text works, for this reason they are present in this article.

Sometimes it happen that: for mistakes, because you don’t rotate your logs or perhaps they growth up really quickly, that you need to analyse a large file (> 1GB) for searching a specific pattern of text. Probably you’ll go nowhere if you try to open them with vi or worst with a graphical editor like Gedit or libreoffice, and if your resource are low you risk to use all the memory and put your linux box in hang.

But don’t worry, like many things in Unix/Linux, there is a specific tool that can help you in this operation: Rowscope

gEdit is a serious text editor in the tradition of many editors that the programmer or code jockey will appreciate – syntax highlighting in many source codes, script formats, markup formats, and even some Scientific formats.

I write a lot of HTML code and I find the multiple undo/redo, find, search & replace, and the built-in code-aware spelling checker essential on a daily basis.
