I must say that in general I don’t like graphical interfaces for system administration, especially when it comes to servers.
But for the less experienced, in special cases or simply to make life easier is convenient sometimes to use Web interfaces for managing applications, or even the entire server, and on Linux, you can choose between some products that have been developed for years and have reached a high level of features and capabilities of management.

defragSometimes it happen that people that I’ve brought on the “Linux side” of the operating systems ask me, “Which antivirus should i use ?” or “should i defrag my disk ?”
This is one of the most complete answer I’ve found to the second question, source Ubuntu Forum

I’d actually strongly suggest not defraging … the reason behind this? Even on windows most defraggers have 2 options, 1 Defragment, 2 Compact … sometimes called something different, but the end result’s the same.

The “defragment” is supposed to make all files into contiguous blocks. The “compact” is supposed to defragment and make the free space into a contiguous block. Now while this sounds nice, the reality is quite different:

devedeSome time ago I’ve wrote a tutorial on how to do a DVD slideshow on Linux, and recently I’ve received a comment about using DeVeDe as DVD Authoring software.

In my article I used  dvd-menu and mkisofs and this can be an alternative for people who prefer graphical tools.

If you read my previous post regarding the site overhaul that I’m currently doing you will have seen me mention that I’m now using the Piwik Open Source Analytics Package in place of Google Analytics. Well I’ve had it running for a few days and have played around with it a bit, so I thought I’d review it. I’m going to start with my reasons for moving from GA and then move along and score it on several different criteria:

 

  • Installation and Setup
  • Site integration
  • User interface
  • Extensibility (API availability)
