WebDAV is always been one of my favorite protocol, because it permit to easily share file system and give user the permission of upload files, on the other side using it from Linux it’s always been a thorn while on Windows it works completely integrated with the OS.

What’s WebDAV ?

Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) is a set of methods based on the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) that facilitates collaboration between users in editing and managing documents and files stored on World Wide Web servers. WebDAV was defined in RFC 4918 by a working group of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).

green linuxNo, I do not want to talk of Linux MINT, but as is practically possible to apply some tricks to make our desktop a bit more nature oriented.

However let me say that thanks to your choice of Linux operating system you are already on the philosophical choice closer to nature:

  • Requires less resources: Linux distributions require an average of fewer resources, and the hardware can be used for longer.
  • KM 0: The Open Source philosophy relies heavily on volunteers who work from home and contribute to various projects.
  • Less packaging: Linux is mainly distributed via downloads and manuals are in digital format.
  • More cheap: In Linux you have many freely available software so you don’t  have to work to buy them.

But now back on practice in particular we’ll see

  • The tickless kernel, which enables the processor to sleep between tasks
  • PowerTop to check what’s consuming more energy

sshIn this article I want to show some use, not trivial, of ssh, but first:

What is SSH?

From Wikipedia:

Secure Shell or SSH is a network protocol that allows data to be exchanged using a secure channel between two networked devices. The two major versions of the protocol are referred to as SSH1 or SSH-1 and SSH2 or SSH-2. Used primarily on Linux and Unix based systems to access shell accounts, SSH was designed as a replacement for Telnet and other insecure remote shells, which send information, notablypasswords, in plaintext, rendering them susceptible to packet analysis. The encryption used by SSH is intended to provide confidentiality and integrity of data over an unsecured network, such as the Internet.

systemrescuecdIt’s happened to all that your system after an upgrade or even for no apparent reason decided to die and not restart. At this point you try to start in Safe Mode, or search the installation CD and start to do guess … or you can use SystemRescueCd, it does not necessarily solve every problem, but you’ll arrive at the verdict and analysis much faster.
SystemRescueCd is a Linux system rescue disk available as a bootable CD-ROM or USB stick  for administrating or repairing your system and data after a crash. It aims to provide an easy way to carry out admin tasks on your computer, such as creating and editing the hard disk partitions.

sorveglianzaIn these days all the new netbooks and most laptops have built-in webcam, or at least add one external costs very little, apart from the traditional use in video calls you can use our Linux box to create a monitoring device, it can be used to monitor your child while you are at another PC, or your pet while you are at work, or have a home-made video surveillance system for your  properties.

To accomplish this we will use the software Motion, the software is present in many distributions, I will give commands using my Ubuntu 10.04.

Feature that made me choose this software is the ability to remain “asleep” until it detects a noise or movement, and then activates and records, plus the ability to define custom actions when it start (send an email, an sms , Etc.).
