bitfighterBitfighter is a free multi-player 2-D space combat game with Robotron-like controls. It’s a team-based strategy game featuring retro vector graphics and customizable ships. It’s fast, fun, and frenetic.

Bitfighter is designed for Windows, Linux, and OS X, and has an active development team.

Bitfighter is a fun shooter for the desktop computer. Bitfighter centers around creating and playing levels made by others. This is done by players hosting servers. Simple, right? Best of all, Bitfighter is a multiplayer game, so grab a few friends and game on!

Installation

Bitfighter has a good support for Linux and on their download page there are the following links:

Ubuntu package is available on the UbuntuUpdates.org Bitfighter package page.

There is a YUM and ZYPP compatible repository you can add to your repository manager; or just navigate to the following URL and follow the path for your distribution and architecture:

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/games

Bitfighter is built for x86 and x86_64 architectures on these platforms:

  • openSUSE 11.1, 11.2, 11.3, and 11.4
  • Fedora 12, 13, and 14
  • Mandriva 2009.1, 2010.0, and 2010.1
  • Debian 5.0

On my ubuntu 11.04 I’ve installed it via the getdeb repository.

Gameplay

Bitfighter has a retro look and feel, with a space setting. You pilot a small, 2D ship packed with multiple weapons and modules to eliminate your enemies and/or complete the objective. 5 weapons and 7 modules are available, however players may only use 3 weapons and 2 modules at one time. While in a game, users may dock at special “loadout zones” to choose which weapons and which modules to carry or drop.

Matches are primarily played on custom maps, which can be created easily in a built-in level editor. The maps load very fast and can be distributed via a simple text file, to other users or server owners.

8 game modes are available, including classics like Capture the Flag or Bitmatch (aka Deathmatch), and some less common (but still exciting) modes like Soccer! There are a number of gameplay objects such as automated turrets, teleports, and lethal asteroids to enhance gameplay.

Furthermore, Bitfighter is very unique. Stuff like support for up to nine teams in a map, FFA support, frequent dying and respawning (you’ll die a LOT), interesting game modes (soccer, need I say more?), etc.

If you’re interested: Please note that Bitfighter has a rather small community base. Games rarely reach 15-20 players, and usually hover below 10. Fortunately, most of the maps are designed for small amounts of people, so even just a 3v3 game can be a blast.

Thanks to Jomskylark for this description made on Reddit (you should give him a +1, he really deserves it).

Events

Roughly every two months a four hour, Big Bitfighter Battle (BBB for short) is hosted by a member of the community, _k. These are competitive matches, with prizes for the most skilled player. However, anybody is welcome and matches have been known to reach 20 players in one game! Sign up on the newsletter to be notified of these events. Upcoming BBBs will likely be held early September and early November 2011.
