Valve has announced on a private mailing list that the Steam client for Linux beta will be opened to everyone from the coming week, this after an initial launch of a closed beta that lasted about 1 month.

Because of the stability provided by the client of Steam for Linux, Valve has finally decided to open the beta to everyone.
In this regard they indicate in the mailing list:

“The Open Beta will be available to the public and will increase the current population from 80K to a higher number”




With respect to the requirements, they are specified by Valve in the Steam Store in the form of the minimum suggested.
Additionally, Valve will also release some new features to accompany the launch of the open public beta of Steam for Linux:

  • A new website with details on how to install Steam on Ubuntu Linux
  • It will create a repository for the Steam client for Linux to have an easier installation.
  • Statistics of Steam games for Linux will be available
  • The list of supported games for Linux will be available at the time of purchase
