Today we all have in our pocket, in the office or our child’s room, a device for shooting videos. Maybe with high quality or HD. Today, with this simple tutorial, I’ll show you how to do, i do not say a new film for an Oscar, but some video with friends or some home movies with your family. Maybe you can take a birthday, a battesimo or a wedding and at your home with a few hours of patience you’ll have a really catchy videos. Video effects, background music, effects with dynamics writing and anything else! In short, everything you want with very little. In fact you can install this software on any PC running Linux (for example in this article I will use Ubuntu 11.10) and with video requirements not so high.

As first thing, I want to clarify that I’m talking about a software that is not linear, which means that our software will absolutely not touch our original video. In doing so we can reuse it as many times as you like. Another embellishment to note is that of the fast publication on YouTube. If you like dogs or just movies, what about doing some caricatures of famous movies and publish them all on your YouTube channel? It may be an idea to have fun and spend your free time, do not you think?

openshot

The software i’m talking about is OpenShot Video Editor; a free, open-source video editor for Linux. OpenShot can take your videos, photos, and music files and help you create the film you have always dreamed of.

The main screen is very simple and intuitive in the area below the time line we have a position where will go any soundtracks, video effects, images and, above all, the video source. On the right we have the useful screen for previewing and on the left a sort of file manager that allows us to navigate among the potential files to insert video, possible film scores and more …
This is only a sprinkling of the functions but i think that what one discover for himself turns out to be worth a thousand essays. So, roll up your sleeves and start to navigate through the many functions available in the software.

Now let’s start with what a lot of people love. The practical part!
First, it is essential that you keep in mind a dispassionate advice from those who have had experience in video editing! Whether you use a super professional software (as in price compared to the role) or less, if you are planning a film for the next Oscar or just the video of the baptism of your son a thing is necessary ! The design!
So, grab a pen and a paper and sketch out a kind of small project. It may seem trivial but this will allow you to have everything under your eyes with ease.

Now let’s see how to combine music and images. Everything is very simple … Click on the “+”! Then click Add and everything is very intuitive!
But stay here to explain step by step every single feature would be very trivial. And, as said before, let learn all the functions alone it will be more funny and you’ll remember them for more time. And i need to tell you one more thing. Install the program OpenShot from the terminal or, simply, from the repository! But if you can not in any of these two ways go the web site and follow the very detailed instructions!

What do you think? Is all very simple … Now you just need to try the software, and why not, let us know the address of the YouTube videos produced by you! It can be a great way to encourage everyone to try this software, do not you think?

  1. Io lo uso per fare i video del mio canale youtube (UbuntuGamingProject) e mi trovo benissimo.. E’ facilissimo da usare e ha sufficienti opzioni per creare un video creativo ed originale…

  2. Looks like the video is a little old. I think most distros have this in the repos. To install you could just type (Ubuntu / Linux Mint) sudo apt-get install openshot, (Arch Linux) pacman -S openshot in a terminal.
