First of all, Zorin team, Linux notes from DarkDuck and Linuxaria would like to say THANK YOU to all the participants of the contest that we ran for last few weeks. It was a real pleasure to see such a response, and to read all your article. As you probably know the winner have been announced in another post and today I want to publish some of the best articles that we’ve received.

So have fun in reading these article of other Linux users.

Hi

Here is my entry:

‘I have been using various levels of computers since the mid 1980’s starting with the trusty Commodore 64 as a 21st present. I naturally graduated to Windows over time. Over the years, after several versons, I became increasingly frustrated with the slowness of Windows. Security is a big issue for Windows nowadays with ‘holes’ and viruses etc popping up all the time. That was when my attention drifted over to Linux’s immunity to Windows-based viruses.

I had attended a basic Unix course in the 80’s so had an ‘inkling’ of what Linux was about (even though the only vague similarity is the UI). I wasn’t sure how to install Linux or even was I was able to do with it. An English tourist (here in New Zealand) introduced me to Ubuntu. I was amazed at how useful it was. That started my addiction to Linux distro hopping.

I tried many different distros before finally settling on Zorin 6. I was very impressed with Zorin’s user-friendliness and attention to detail. I quickly installed Zorin 6 Ultimate. Every release has simply got better and better. Since then I have installed Zorin OS 7 Ultimate on my PC and Zorin 7 Lite on my netbook. When released I installed Zorin 8 on both my PC and netbook. I will install Zorin 9 shortly on my PC and (eagerly) await for Zorin 9 Lite for installation on my netbook too.

I still download distros .. but, quite simply, nothing compares to the simple robustness of the graphically-pleasing Zorin. There are Windows programs I can’t do without… and Zorin will still let me run these programs within Zorin. Very handy. Well done and top marks to the Zorin team and contributors!’

This one (another one one of the winner) is by Clive Nodder

“Dad, my windows are broken.” Oh, no! What has he been up to now? Playing football in the garden again? I better go and have a look. There was no glass on the carpet; no damage to be seen at all. “What are you on about, son? Winding me up again?!”

It turned out that there had been an automatic update, and the sound no longer worked, and his favourite game wouldn’t run at all. Worse, he couldn’t connect to the Internet, which he needed to do in order to upload his homework for marking.

As it happened, I had just been testing Zorin OS 8 on a USB stick, on my own laptop. I loved the way Zorin Look Changer can make your computer look like what you might be used to at work, or on your own machine – XP, 2000, 7 (and even OS X, if you use the Ultimate version). The range of software that is included is amazing, too – games, office stuff, apps that let you edit photographs and even video. There are heaps more, but the list would be too long to include here.

“Right, son. Why not have a go with this?” We plugged in the USB stick and re-booted into a live session. Quick to boot, and solid as a rock while running. Found the WiFi network straight away, and Chrome was our default window to the Web. Youtube ran nicely and Steam worked perfectly.

“How about the sound, son – working OK?” I asked.

“Sure, dad. This is pretty cool. Can I keep it, please?”

Looks like there’s another convert to Zorin OS.
