In a previous post i’ve presented you 3 space games, today i add one to that list: Oolite
Oolite is a space sim game, inspired by Elite, powered by Objective-C and OpenGL, and designed as a small game that is easy for users to pick up, modify and expand upon. Almost every aspect of the game can be changed by using simple, free graphics packages and text editors.
Installation
Oolite it’s available in Ubuntu and Debian repositories so on these distributions you can install it with :
aptitude install oolite |
Otherwise you can download it from the offical site where you can find the versions for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux, current release is the 1.75 and the project is licensed under the GPL .
The Game
In OOlite, you are a space trader like in the old classic Elite.
It combines 3D graphics with the classic space trading and dog fight action that Elite made popular.
Money can also be earned by destroying pirate ships and collecting bounty. Players can become pirates themselves, attacking merchantmen and other ships. Although no bounty is awarded for destroying non-pirate ships, when a ship is destroyed, some of its cargo can survive the explosion. If the player’s ship is equipped with a scoop, this cargo can be salvaged for later resale. It is also possible, with the right equipment, to mine asteroids for ores and other materials.
OOlite’s creators have built on that and given their users the ability to add in custom ships, modules, solar system maps. Gameplay goes back to the simple open ended galaxy running of the original Elite. Additionaly, enhancements to the core game are introduced in the expansion packs.
Conclusions
The game it’s around 25 MB , has a basic 3D graphic, retro Music and a great plot, I like this game, you can keep it on the hard disk and sometime forget about the Earth, take your favorite ship and start travel in the universe.
