After about a month of work and various tests I’m proud to make public the result of this commitment:

UbuBox “SalentOS” live 11.04.

The idea to make a personal operating system, flashed in my head for quite some time, but for one reason or another I never managed to get to work seriously on such a project. In these days I decided to commit myself “full time” to it and I did it, also pushed by the wave of news that are coming in the world of the penguin! I did not, initially, planned to make UbuBox “SalentOS” public. Then, along the way, thanks to the advice of some friends and the realization that the system satisfy me, I said “Who knows … maybe this could satisfy someone else too. Why not make it public?”. Holidays are approaching, at least for me, I live in Italy, the work and the study become heavier because of the heat and this increases the desire for some recreation. Even the simplest games can be very funny if you are in a suitable place. While I was looking for a specific site, I came accidentally across to a weird site: nonciclopedia.wikia.com (uncyclopedia.wikia.com for the English version, but it’s available in different languages). I can already hear someone say: “but come on, you do not know this one ?” Yes, I did not know about this site before three days ago. And I think that there might be someone else who does not know it. I have read some articles in Italian and English, and none was a simple translation from one language to another, so for people who know more than one language these sites are more funny. Thanks to a great application list made by Carla Schroder I’ve discovered this software: Game Editor.

Game Editor is the open source game design software that gives you the power to create the games of your dreams, and, unlike other game creation tools, gives you the chance to get and change the source code of the game creator and design and develop 2D games for personal computers as well as mobile devices.

Easy image mounting with CDemu and Nautilus

I was in need to mount some image from Nero, and so i discovered an useful small program: CDEmu.

CDEmu is a CD/DVD-ROM device emulator for linux, licensed under GPL v2 or later. It is a from-scratch rewrite of the legacy CDEmu project, which was started by Robert Penz.

And while i was searching for some documentation i found this useful from Gentoo Forum, a bit old, but still good:

Now that CDemu 1.0.0 is in Portage i decided to update my Nautilus mount script. What does it do? You Just right-click on an image, choose Scripts, disk-mount. It will load your image into an available device, your desktop’s automounter does the rest. Easy. CDemu supports all kinds of images, as opposed to mount -o loop, which can only handle iso. Also, you don’t need root rights to mount.

xmpp Everyone in the Gnu/Linux world (or so i think) has been worried by the news about Microsoft buying Skype, the standard de facto about VOIP.

But perhaps there is a hope for a future more open on this software ?

Skype 5.5 beta support now the protocol XMPP, this has been added mainly to talk with facebook, in fact the leader of the social networks uses this protocol for his chat, but this could open a lot of possibility for Skype also for other things.
