OpenELEC is an embedded operating system built specifically to run XBMC, the open source entertainment media hub. The idea behind OpenELEC is to allow people to use their Home Theatre PC (HTPC) like any other device you might have attached to your TV, like a DVD player or Sky box.

But before continuing with OpenELEC i do a step back and say a few words about XBMC.
Xbox Media Center (XBMC) is an open source program created for the Xbox and now available on xbmc.org for Mac, Windows, Linux, Android, Apple TV and Xbox. On all platforms other than Xbox, XBMC acts as an application, possibly launched at boot time or later.

XBMC can play most formats of audio/video, and if there is an internet connection it’s able to use network services, such as getting movie and album reviews, or view movies in streaming.

Zentyal, formerly known as eBox Platform, is a multi-purpose Linux Ubuntu remastered and it’s based on Ubuntu server 10.04 (LTS). It can function as a network gateway, unified threat manager, office server, infrastructure manager, and a unified communications server. The project’s source code is available under terms of the GNU General Public License, as well as under a variety of proprietary agreements. Zentyal is owned and sponsored by a single for-profit firm, the Spanish company eBox Technologies S.L., which holds the copyright to the codebase

The declared goal of this software it’s to be an alternative for small and medium business to Windows.

You don’t feel good… maybe this is a radioactive and toxic place … you may not have much time… You find some stupid robots… with strange answers to your questions.

I must say that in general I don’t like graphical interfaces for system administration, especially when it comes to servers.
But for the less experienced, in special cases or simply to make life easier is convenient sometimes to use Web interfaces for managing applications, or even the entire server, and on Linux, you can choose between some products that have been developed for years and have reached a high level of features and capabilities of management.

brokenAfter some studies, or perhaps a specialist course or presentation you’d like to start to implement in your company the best practice you have learnt, and perhaps start a new and better era for your IT department.

But it seem that something always go in the wrong way or there are unexpected difficulties that make all your plans, and dreams, fails; and after some fight you usually end saying “ok that WAS the best practice and we are sure to don’t follow it”.

This is my list of things I’ve found impossible to realize in some years of work.
