This is an utility to clean junk to free disk space and to maintain privacy deleting in a secure way files and directory.

BleachBit quickly frees disk space and tirelessly guards your privacy. Free cache, delete cookies, clear Internet history, shred temporary files, delete logs, and discard junk you didn’t know was there. Designed for Linux and Windows systems, it wipes clean 90 applications including Firefox, Internet Explorer, Adobe Flash, Google Chrome, Opera, OpenOffice, Safari,and more

Beyond simply deleting files, BleachBit includes advanced features such as shredding files to prevent recovery, wiping free disk space to hide traces of files deleted by other applications, and vacuuming Firefox to make it faster. BleachBit it is open source.


Installation

BleachBit it’s available for many distribution, so you should be able to install it with your package manager, in alternative you can download .deb and .rpm from the offical download page.

For Ubuntu 11.04 i’ve used

aptitude install bleachbit

Uses

Once installed you can use the program by going to Applications -> systems, or run it from the command line with bleachbit , the program has two panels, one left and one right.

The left panel of BleachBit shows the list of applications that are supported. Select the applications you want to clean (the cleaning does not mean uninstall, just delete the cache files created by the application). Click on the Preview button (Preview) to see which files will be deleted. You can also go down the list to see how much disk space is freed, once that are deleted the cache and temporary files .

To delete some system files BleachBit must be run as root.


Use BleachBit to:

  • Free disk space
  • Reduce the size of backups and the time to create them by removing unnecessary files
  • Maintain privacy
  • Improve system performance (by vacuuming the Firefox database, for example)
  • Prepare whole disk images for compression (common for “ghost” backups and virtual machines) by wiping free disk space

Conclusions

This program is really to be used and check a long list of applications, on my desktop it saved me around 600 MB of space deleting some cache and logs i did not even know that existed.
