Productivity is very important. With a boost in productivity we save time and we get more work done in short period. That is why today in factories the production lines are automated. Productivity boosting is also important in everyday computer usage. No matter if you are just an regular desktop user, power user, developer or podcaster, with a boost in productivity you can save time, get more done and even also save some disk space, CPU and RAM usage. Many people do not know that there are some excelent opensource applications for increment the productivity. Some of them come as standard GNU tools with every Linux based operating system and other are standard parts from every major Linux distribution.

Idea behind this article is to cover some softwares that will be helpful for regular desktop users and also for small companies and offices.

1. ) Linux Terminal

Linux console is very powerful and useful. Learning your way through console should be on a to do list for every user. Today most users look at console like some archaic software, but console is not dead. It is used by millions of users everyday. Administration of systems, databases, development and many more tasks can be done faster from console then from any GUI application.

You can check my article on 10 programs to be used from the terminal, to get some idea of what you can do on the command line.

I received this article from Saska Dasgupta and gladly publish it.

I discovered the Linux and open source world around 4 years ago, and from that date I’m trying to know more open source software or projects.

I must say that they changed my life both as I started to use different software but the most important thing, in my opinion, is that I’ve discovered a different way to think to software and collaboration, or should I say understand what really means Free software ?

There are different open source software and projects, that I use in my work or at home and that in some way changed (in better) my life:

List of my top 10 open source software

  1. Miro Video Converter:If you want to switch over videos of any format to different formats, then this open source known as Miro Video Converter will be very useful for you. Miro is absolutely free and it is an open source video player and open source TV player where you can access the maximum number of HD content as compared to any other video player. It is also suitable for the Android devices or the iOS.I like this software as it’s really simple to use and allow me to change format of the video to see them on my mobile devices or my TV.

You can find all of these games on Steam, and most of them are available at a discounted price on The Humble Store, I suggest to take a look at both websites as in these days they are doing big sales on these titles with discounts from 25 up to 75% of the listed price.

yoimnotpro_preview

A few months ago I switched from Gentoo to Arch Linux as Linux distribution on my PC at work, and at the moment I am very happy with this distribution, but there is to say it is not so easiest to use for newcomers to the Linux world and so they typically approaches the most popular and user friendly Ubuntu.

Yo I’m Not Pro or Yoimnotpro center is a simple app center that allows you to graphically install some of the most common and useful packages available for this excellent distribution in a more simple way and therefore can help to bring some more users to this excellent distribution.

This has been in my opinion the first real year, and hopefully this will continue, for gamers on Linux, this is due to a massive investment by Valve in bringing the Steam platform on Linux systems and their planned Steam OS, that will be based on Linux.

So in short, I’ve never seen so many different games (also if closed source) available for my Linux desktop, and this is my personal top 10 of the games that I’ve played this year.

7 Defender’s Quest – Valley of the Forgotten

2 Let 4 dead 2
1 Crusader Kings II

As you can see from this list I like strategic and RPG games, but in this list there are also other genres, let’s take a closer look to each of them.
