Transmission is a must for those looking for a simple and efficient BitTorrent client for convenient everyday use, especially for lovers of downloading free music and software.
The BitTorrent protocol is increasingly used, and sometimes almost indispensable, for example on a site of free music (http://www.jamendo.com/) is the official protocol, there are a few free clients such as Transmission. It is an open source, cross-platform, volunteer-based project.
Unlike some BitTorrent clients, Transmission doesn’t play games with its users to make money, consequently there are no advertisements or insidious links.
The software is not the kind to embarrass features, instead it focuses on the essentials, in order to provide a fast, lightweight and functional client: it is designed for easy, powerful use.

Accessing your home computer (I’ll call it server on this article) from a remote location (that I’ll call client) outside the local network, can be very interesting, for example, listening to streaming music played by MPD, managing downloads in the bittorrent client Transmission through its web interface, controlling the machine via SSH … However, before accessing your server remotely, you must know the “address” or IP (Internet Protocol address), but generally at home they are provided dynamically, through the Internet Service Provider, so it’s not so easy to know the IP of your home server.
We will see how to automatically update the DNS name on a domain name server (DynDNS) with the current IP address of the server thanks to ddclient. Continue reading »

Open TTD is a wonderful new revamp open source expansion of the classic Transport Tycoon Deluxe and with a price tag of free, it’s a great, inexpensive, and fun way to waste your time. This free price tag was brought about by the gaming community’s development of replacement software. Up until 2009 you had to have the Transport Tycoon Deluxe software which was no longer being supported by developers. But now, thanks to fan devotion, this is a completely free classic transport simulation tycoon-style game that all players can love, so let’s see what the fuss is all about.

This is an interesting article by Paolo Rotolo, it’s a comparison of MIR (in the Xmir version that will be present on Ubuntu 13.10) and the current Xorg.

After the announcement of Canonical on Mir, which will be included as a default display server in Ubuntu 13.10, I decided to do some tests (benchmark, in the jargon), to see whether the performances of Mir are comparable to those of the good old X.org (the daemons currently present on Ubuntu), as promised by Mark Shuttleworth on his blog.

All benchmarks were performed with the suite “Phoronix Test” on Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy Salamander).

I’ve done all the test run on an hardware with low-medium specs (especially the video card), because with a more powerful PC, the differences between X.org and Mir would have been less relevant.
