Linux Terminal: speedtest_cli checks your real bandwidth speed.

What’s your upload and download speed at home (or in your office) ?
Are you really sure that you get what do you pay for to your ISP ?

To test the speed of our internet connection There are several internet services such as SpeedTest a web service that is available both from Web browsers and mobile application.

Now you can easily check it also with speedtest_cli a command line interface for testing internet bandwidth using speedtest.net. In this way you can do the test also on servers that don’t have a Browser or a graphical interface. Continue reading »

Sad news for deb users – GetDeb and PlayDeb discontinue

NEWS: 03- Feb 2013 Sites GetDeb.net, PlayDeb.net and repository up again, from G+

Fortunately, we did have an up-to-date backup of the old server at the end. The last days I was busy to get everything set up. The sites are up again and you should be able to browse the packages (none should be lost) as well as to use the repository as usual. If you have problems be sure that “dig screenshots.getdeb.net” outputs “208.113.160.150”

A sad day indeed for many users of the .deb format, 2 of my favourites repositories getdeb and playdeb are now closed forever (?), this is the message posted on G+ by their author:

After the server crash where also the GetDeb and PlayDeb database was lost and given the fact that GetDeb and PlayDeb now have too many packages to be handled as a one-man-project I decided to discontinue GetDeb and PlayDeb.
In the last years I have spent so many hours in the project that now it is just too much for me to maintain beside my usual job.

But this does not mean that all the work in GetDeb and PlayDeb is lost.

If you manage remote machines you have for sure some way to connect to them, to connect to Unix machines I’m used to open a terminal with my favorite terminal emulator (Terminator in these days), and from there ssh to other servers, for Windows RDP protocol as client i use Remmina (perhaps i’ll talk of it in a future article) and for FTP and SFTP i use Filezilla, but i’ve found recently another interesting software that could change my habitudes: PAC Manager, where PAC stand for Perl/Gtk approach to connections managing.

Ah, and i know that the title it’s in broken English, the phrase it comes from an old videogame.
