My Notes from Open Source System Management Conference 2012

Even this year I was in Bolzano (Italy) for the annual conference organized by Wuerth-Phoenix on Monitoring with Open Source products.

I found the conference very interesting, with speakers from around the world that have described several open source products and best practices on monitoring but also on configuration and management tools. A big surprise for me has been the strong push for alternatives softwares to Nagios for monitoring in particular Shinken and Icinga have received many praise.

But before I give some more details about the presentations a few words about the company that has hosted about 400 people in their, free of charge, event, Wuerth-Phoenix manufactures and markets an appliance called NetEye, within there are many Open source products including:

Nagios Core, with many preinstalled plugins, Cacti, ocsinventory, GLPI, NfSen, Nedi, and DocuWiki the highest level version has also OTRS, all these software are integrated with some web management interface developed by Wuerth-Phoenix itself. Continue reading »

Thruk a Monitoring Webinterface for Nagios

In these days I’m testing an alternative web interface for Nagios : Thruk
The First impression is definitely positive, and so I decided to share this information so more people can know and use this software.

Thruk is an independent multibackend monitoring webinterface which currently supports Nagios, Icinga and Shinken as backend using the MKLivestatus addon.

It is designed to be a “dropin” replacement. The target is to cover 100% of the original features plus additional enhancements for large installations.

NagiosQL is a web based administration tool for Nagios 2.x, 3.x and Icinga 1.x. It helps you to easily build a complex configuration with all options, manage and use them. NagiosQL is based on a webserver with PHP, MySQL and local file or remote access to the Nagios configuration files via ssh or ftp.

The product relies on a Mysql DB which keep all the configurations for Nagios, there is also the option “dump to disk” which writes all configuration files of Nagios, you can also import from Nagios configuration text files to the database.
