I’ve received this press-release from Proxmox, I like their software and I really believe that it can enhance the work of system administrators, and so I’m happy to publish this news about their new release.

What’s Proxvox ?

Proxmox Virtual Environment is a complete open source virtualization management solution for servers. It supports KVM-based guests, as well as container-virtualization with OpenVZ and includes strong high-availability (HA) support based on Redhat Cluster and Corosync. Installation is fast and easy with a bare-metal installer and configuration is done via the integrated web-based management interface. Based on Debian GNU/Linux and fully licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License, Version 3 (AGPL-3.0), Proxmox VE is a solution without restrictions for home and business use.

What’s new in 3.1 release ?

Today I’ll talk about a very important type of monitoring that is rarely discussed (perhaps because not so many people are privileged to work with hardware that supports this technology: IPMI).

The Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) is a standard used to manage a computer system and monitor its operation. Its development was led by Intel and is today supported by more than 200 hardware manufacturers.
Its operation is independent of an operating system, which allows administrators to remotely manage the hardware resources even before any OS starts. For example, we can monitor through IPMI system temperatures, voltages, fans (FAN), power supplies, chassis intrusion, etc..
For the ones that wants to go deeper in IPMI specifics, I suggest reading the website of Intel . I think the most interested in this are the Data Center Managers and System Administrators of sites that must be highly available. An IPMI interface collects information using sensors that are responsible for providing this information in real-time.

Even this year I was in Bolzano (Italy) for the annual conference organized by Wuerth-Phoenix on Monitoring with Open Source products.

I found the conference very interesting, with speakers from around the world that have described several open source products and best practices on monitoring but also on configuration and management tools. A big surprise for me has been the strong push for alternatives softwares to Nagios for monitoring in particular Shinken and Icinga have received many praise.

But before I give some more details about the presentations a few words about the company that has hosted about 400 people in their, free of charge, event, Wuerth-Phoenix manufactures and markets an appliance called NetEye, within there are many Open source products including:

Nagios Core, with many preinstalled plugins, Cacti, ocsinventory, GLPI, NfSen, Nedi, and DocuWiki the highest level version has also OTRS, all these software are integrated with some web management interface developed by Wuerth-Phoenix itself. Continue reading »
